Love us some Pinckneys Produce CSA

April 28, 2011

Pinkney’s Produce is a South Carolina-based community supported agriculture (CSA) program. The farm is located in Holly Hill, SC.  My family and I discovered CSA last year and were blown away by the variety and quality of the produce we received during the 13 weeks of the spring growing season.

What’s CSA? From LocalHarvest

Over the last 20 years, CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

We tried new veggies we’d never had before – like kale and beets – and discovered lots of new recipes and cooking skills. I even wowed the family one night with zucchinni lasagna!  In the first week of this year’s season, we’ve already found out we like roasted turnips.

Eating locally means fresher produce and also helps the enviroment. LocalHarvest has a great tool to help find a CSA near you, and check out Palmettovore while you’re at it..
