Computer advice?

January 15, 2011

Shelly and I need to go out today and buy a new family desktop. We don’t need anything real spectacular. We want to manage our iTunes, store and touch up photos and edit the occassional Flip video.

We want to be able to stream Hulu and Netflix without disruption, so we want to hook it to the HDTV. Not sure if it’s worth it to spend extra dough for HDMI out put though.

We’re looking at a Compaq at best buy that has an AMD dual core processor, 1 gig of RAM and a 500 gig hard drive. Sorry I don’t have more specs, but I am posting this from my phone, people, so cut me some slack.

Our budget is under $500.

Soooooo, friends, what should I buy?

A few questions:Are you looking for just a new tower or a whole desktop, monitor, etc bundle?Does it have to be brand new? Would a deal on eBay or Craigs be an option?Tips:It will eat most of your budget but make sure you get a machine with a good graphics card and at least 4GB of ram for good video playback. That Compaq would not be able to handle the HD streams on Netflix.

We could get away with just the tower if we had, too, but generally the packages cost about the same, so we’d usually do that.Others mentioned the Mac Mini, which I had sort of overlooked. Gonna give that some consideration.

Yeah I was thinking about the Mini when I was asking those questions. The new ones have HDMI built in. It just a matter of getting it under $500 especially if you want a new monitor and such. I’ll search eBay.
